Can you corner the market in your corner of the world – and is it a good idea to do so? A panel of 4 communicators from 4 corners of North America discuss how being a local expert can help or possibly hinder a successful career in garden communication. Panel members will share tips and learning experiences that have aided or impeded their career development, and offer insights on how they have managed to survive and thrive in this changing industry.
Larry Hodgson is the immediate past president of Hoticom, Inc. He is a freelancer garden communicator living in Quebec City. He writes and speaks in both English and French and is a regular contributor to garden magazines throughout North America. He writes a weekly garden column for the Le Soleil newspaper, speaks frequently to horticultural groups and is a regular garden commentator on television and radio. His gardening blogs – Laidback Gardener (laidbackgardener.wordpress.com) and Le jardinier paresseux (jardinierparesseux.com) reach an average of over 10,000 people a day. His book credits include Making the Most of Shade, The Garden Lovers Guide to Canada, Perennials for Every Purpose and Ortho’s Complete Guide to Houseplants, as well as some 45 other titles in English and French. He regularly leads garden tours to various countries around the world.
Noelle Johnson is a horticulturist, landscape consultant, certified arborist, and garden writer who lives and gardens in the desert southwest. She is the also the author of the popular blog, ‘Ramblings From a Desert Garden’. Noelle received her degree in Urban Horticulture from Arizona State University and went to work managing golf course landscapes and later working as a landscape designer. Today, she works as a landscape consultant, helping her clients create beautiful, drought tolerant landscapes. Noelle also writes regional garden content for several publications including Birds & Blooms Magazine, Home Depot, Houzz, and Phoenix Home & Garden Magazine. When Noelle isn’t busy writing and creating beautiful outdoor spaces, you can often find her playing outside - growing fruits, vegetables, planting flowers and maybe a cactus or two.
Mary Ann Newcomer
Mary Ann Newcomer considers herself “a garden scribe, scout and speaker.” She shares everything she loves about gardening @ www.gardensofthewildwildwest.com, and she’s known as the Dirt Diva on the River Radio, 94.9 in Boise, ID. Her articles have been published in Rocky Mountain Gardening, Country Gardens, MaryJane’s Farm, & Fine Gardening. An accomplished horticulturalist, she has wielded her design talents on public, private, commercial, and show gardens.
Jacqueline Soule is a long-time Southwest gardener and award-winning garden writer with eleven published books (so far). For 20 years she had been producing regular weekly and monthly columns in a number of national, regional and local publications, including Southwest Trees & Turf, The Explorer Newspaper and Angie's List magazine. In addition to writing, Jacqueline shares her gardening knowledge in public speaking venues such as community classes and conferences. She is highly popular speaker. Dr. Soule has a B.S. in Horticulture and a B.S. in Ecology, Evolutionary Biology from the University of Arizona both with Honors and Cum Laude, a M.S. in Botany from Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Texas. Jacqueline learned gardening from her father and grandparents, and has been getting dirt under her fingernails since toddler-hood. Her first published article in a national magazine was at age 7, and she has been writing and publishing ever since. She has been a member of GWA since 1985, hosted the 2012 GWA Symposium in Tucson, and has reached a point in her career where she can become more involved in the organization itself.
