Plants of Pocahontas, Powhatan and Captain John Smith

An amazing discovery has been made right in our own neighborhood that has to do with the legend of Werowocomoco - the home and village of Chief Powhatan, father of Pocahontas, and we are eager to share the story with you!

On Monday, March 31, 2008 at 10am, please join us as attend a private presentation on the farm where the village of Werowocomoco was found.  Through persistence of its owners and careful archeological excavations led by Dr. Martin Gallivan from the College of William and Mary's Department of Anthropology, this amazing story has unfolded.  As part of this effort, they have studied the remains of plants found at the site in order to reconstruct the Native diet and local environment.  We will also have the rare opportunity to understand Werowocomoco's botanical history that helped to record the settlement of the village, the clearing of forests to create open fields, and the beginnings of corn-based agriculture. Justine McKnight, an archeobotanical consultant who specializes in the analysis of plant macro-remains from Prehistoric and Historic archaeological sites, will accompany Dr. Gallivan in an inspiring walking tour of the 45 acre site and will summarize this history and botany along with its importance for understanding Virginia's landscapes, past and present.

After lunch, Wesley Greene, Horticultural Historian of Colonial Williamsburg, will inspire us with his amazing knowledge and presentation about plants before, during and after Pocahontas!

We have chosen this particular Monday for this event because it follows the weekend of Gloucester County's famous 'Daffodil Festival' with two days filled with activities for people of all ages: A parade, entertainment, lots of food, arts and crafts, face painting, pony rides, games and much, much more.  The Daffodil Show sponsored by the Garden Club of Gloucester can also be enjoyed that same weekend.  With Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown only about 30 miles away, it's a terrific way to spend 3 days with many prospects of story lines and numerous photo ops! For more information on the Daffodil Festival, please visit: http://www.gloucesterva.info/pr/events/df/homepage.html

There will be a wine and cheese Region IV meeting at Brent and Becky's Heath's house at 4pm that afternoon.  We hope you all can come!
